 Coding Qualitative Data

Outside of some definitions what stood out to me was the vocabulary used< I found myself creating a vocabulary list and not feeling guilty about it but instead embracing new language to use.

Vocabulary Words

Generalizability: the degree to which you can apply the results of your study to a broader context.

Comparabilitythe fact or quality of being similar and able to be compared

Prestructuring: to make something into or provide with a structure in advanced.

Ethnoscience approaches seeks to document categories and terms for landscapes and features.

Cognitive anthropology: seek to explain patterns of knowledge, cultural innovation, and transmission over time and space using methods and theories of cognitive sciences often through close collaboration with specialist engaged in the description and interpretation of cultural forms.

Operationalizing: turning unmeasurable things (abstract concepts) into measurable observations. (How do we collect data?)

design- what happens to data before it is collected

Research relationships are an important aspect to our research. Two questions you should ask yourself before thinking about engaging with participants.

  • what kinds of relationships do you WANT to have?
  • what needs to be done in order to establish such relationships?
QUALITATIVE IS PURPOSEFUL SAMPLING- deliberate.

When I read material like this, I look forward to being in class to make sense of it all in laymen's terms.
What I believe to be true is research is complicated and challenging.
